The Rant of Love

The Rant of Love

I am a weird kind of romantic. I love seeing those couples that just click. I am ever hopeful that people will find what they are looking for and be happy. I don’t, however, melt at movies like titanic because the realist in me screams at the screen that if they had taken turns on the damn board they could have lived a long life and probably gotten divorced.  Ok, that was kind of a cynical turn at the end but it’s probably true. at any rate, I love romance. I get stupid expressions on my face over the old couples that have been together 70 years and still hold hands. I love the racing heart certain people can cause. I believe in Aristotle’s theory of split aparts... With a few addendums.

That being said Valentine’s Day annoys the living hell out of me.

Nothing says tell them they are special but buying the same thing everyone else is. Or my personal favorite irritation; buy her jewelry and get laid! (Thanks Jared) Every kiss begins with Kay? What the Fuck ends with K but I am not using sesame street marketing tactics to guilt people into buying crap. But I digress. The point of this is to offer another opinion of Valentine’s Day.

Ok let’s be honest it’s kind of disturbing that we celebrate the anniversary of the horrific butchering of a saint with cutesy penguin cards and mass made chocolates in the very shape of an organ they carved out of that particular saint’s chest. Moreover I don’t like the high pressure guilt sales that the holiday places on people, men in general. More than all that, I don’t like the message. I am pretty sure that’s coming across clearly.

Want romance? Go for it! Don’t wait until one cold day in February when we are all sick of winter and still hung over from the Christmas holidays. Make that shit happen daily, and I am talking to bith genders here. Not with stupid trinkets bought at stores. With gestures. With Notes. With poorly drawn cartoons that MEAN something to the person you have affection for. Me personally, some of the most romantic things I have ever received (and still have packed away somewhere) were simple things that were thoughtful. Love notes, sketches, Dried wild flowers. None of that stuff cost anything and still years later means me to me than any store bought bauble ever could.  Effort and attention, that’s all anyone wants, Bring it back to basics and make it meaningful.

And if all else fails.. Cheap chocolate on February 15th.
